Overview Energy emerges from stealth with a breakthrough in space solar transmission

Overview Energy has publicly launched after achieving a major technical milestone: the world’s first airborne power-beaming demonstration designed for space-solar operations.

The company successfully transmitted power from a moving aircraft to a ground receiver 5 km below, using the same near-infrared laser-based system it plans to deploy in orbit. This achievement validates the system’s ability to operate in motion, a critical step before the company conducts its first low Earth orbit demonstration in 2028.

Overview is developing satellites that collect continuous sunlight in geosynchronous orbit and beam energy down to existing and future utility-scale solar sites.

By sending low-intensity, fiber-optic-grade near-infrared light to Earth, the system aims to turn solar into a 24/7 baseload resource, dynamically shifting power across continents in real time. This architecture requires no major grid overhauls and is designed to support high-demand customers such as cities, data centers, and military installations.

The airborne test marks Overview’s second technical milestone, following earlier lab validation of its high-power laser and optics system.

The company plans an orbital demo by 2028 and targets the world’s first megawatt-scale power transmission from space by 2030.

Overview, founded in 2022, has raised $20M from Engine Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, Prime Movers Lab, EQT Foundation, Earthrise Ventures, and others.

Its team brings deep experience across high-power lasers, space systems, manufacturing, and regulatory frameworks.
