The U.S. Space Force Space Systems Command has awarded more than $1.8 billion in firm fixed-price “Andromeda” contracts to 14 companies for the development of the Geosynchronous Reconnaissance & Surveillance (RG-XX) satellite constellation.

The program is intended to succeed the Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program, which currently provides on-orbit inspection and monitoring capabilities.

The selected companies include:

Anduril Industries
Lockheed Martin
Millennium Space Systems
Northrop Grumman
L3Harris Technologies
BAE Systems
Sierra Space
Redwire
General Atomics
Astranis Space Technologies
True Anomaly
Turion Space
Intuitive Machines
Quantum Space

The RG-XX constellation is expected to expand on the capabilities of the existing GSSAP system, whose satellites conduct rendezvous and proximity operations to observe other spacecraft in geosynchronous orbit.

While details of the new constellation remain limited, it is anticipated to be larger in scale and incorporate more advanced technologies for space domain awareness.

The contracts were awarded through a competitive process that received 32 proposals, with work scheduled to continue through 2036.

According to Space Force officials, RG-XX is designed to maintain continuity with current GSSAP operations while leveraging faster build cycles and more cost-effective components.

The approach is expected to serve as a model for future defense space acquisitions, particularly as demand for real-time space domain awareness continues to grow.
