Sophia Space has partnered with Apex for a 2027 orbital computing demonstration and raised an additional $7 million, bringing its total funding to $22 million.

Sophia Space has announced a strategic partnership with satellite manufacturer Apex and the closing of a $7 million SAFE financing round, bringing the company's total funding to $22 million.

The collaboration will support a planned 2027 demonstration mission in which Sophia Space's TILE (Thermal Integrated LEO Edge) computing modules will fly aboard an Apex Nova satellite bus.

The mission is intended to demonstrate real-time data processing in orbit, enabling satellites to analyze information directly in space rather than relying solely on ground-based processing.

The company believes on-orbit processing can reduce latency and improve responsiveness for time-sensitive operations.

CEO and co-founder Robert DeMillo said the goal is to enable satellites to make autonomous decisions and process data closer to where it is generated.

CTO and founder Leon Alkalai described the company's technology as a foundation for future space-based computing infrastructure, allowing spacecraft to function as autonomous computing nodes.

Apex will provide its Nova satellite platform for the demonstration mission.

Apex CEO and co-founder Ian Cinnamon said the partnership aligns with Apex's focus on helping emerging space technologies reach operational deployment more quickly through standardized spacecraft platforms.

The $7 million financing round was led by EverGreen - The NVIDIA Alumni Investment Network, with participation from SparkLabs Group and other strategic investors.

According to Sophia Space, the funding will be used to advance product development, expand engineering and commercial teams, build partnerships, and support deployment of its technology across government, commercial, and international markets.

Commenting on the investment, EverGreen Founding Partner Jeff Brown highlighted the growing importance of AI-optimized computing infrastructure in space, while SparkLabs co-founder Bernard Moon pointed to the convergence of artificial intelligence and the expanding space economy as a key driver of future demand.
