Rocket Lab will acquire Motiv Space Systems to expand its space robotics capabilities, strengthen vertical integration, and support future lunar, planetary, and national security missions.

Rocket Lab has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Motive Space Systems, a California-based developer of advanced space robotics, motion control systems, and precision spacecraft mechanisms.

The acquisition strengthens Rocket Lab’s push toward full vertical integration while adding Mars-proven robotics expertise for future planetary exploration and national security missions.

Motiv’s technologies have supported major NASA programs including the Mars Perseverance rover and the CADRE lunar rover initiative.

Following the acquisition, the company will operate as “Rocket Lab Robotics,” expanding Rocket Lab’s capabilities in robotic arms, spacecraft actuators, precision mechanisms, and on-orbit motion control systems.

The deal also helps Rocket Lab bring critical spacecraft components in-house, including solar array drive assemblies (SADAs), antenna gimbals, propulsion gimbals, and other high-demand precision mechanisms that are often supply constrained across the space industry.

The company says the move will reduce manufacturing bottlenecks, lower costs, and accelerate satellite production at constellation scale.

Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck said the acquisition aligns with the company’s strategy of acquiring proven space technologies and scaling them through Rocket Lab’s manufacturing and operational infrastructure.

Motiv CEO Chris Thayer said joining Rocket Lab will allow Motiv to scale its robotics platforms and support a broader range of missions.

Motiv’s 50-person engineering team and Pasadena manufacturing facility will become part of Rocket Lab’s growing global footprint spanning the United States, Canada, Germany, and New Zealand.
