Italy and NASA Sign Agreement to Cooperate on the Development of a Lunar Surface Base

The Italian Government (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana) and NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration have signed a new agreement to cooperate on the development of a U.S.-led lunar surface base. T

he deal builds on prior collaboration between the two nations, including a 2022 agreement that tasked Italy with leading the design of a multi-purpose lunar habitation module through Thales Alenia Space Italia under contract with the Italian Space Agency.

The agreement follows a shift in NASA’s exploration strategy outlined by Administrator Jared Isaacman on March 24, which includes pausing development of the Gateway in favor of focusing on a sustained human presence on the Moon via a surface base.

The new bilateral Statement of Intent, signed on March 31 with Italian Minister Adolfo Urso, covers cooperation on habitation systems, communications infrastructure, and scientific activities.

As part of the agreement, Italy is expected to receive a flight opportunity for at least one astronaut on a future mission under the Artemis program.

Italian officials indicated that the arrangement reflects the country’s contributions to lunar infrastructure and broader participation in long-term exploration efforts.
