ORiS Raises $5.7 Million to Advance Laser-Based Wireless Power for Satellites

Turin-based deep-tech startup ORiS has closed a €4.5 million pre-seed round led by Earlybird Venture Capital and co-led by Pitchdrive, with participation from Galaxia, Vento, and Piemonte Next Fund.

The company also secured a €0.5 million grant through the Piedmont Region’s startup support program, bringing its recently secured funding to €5 million.

ORiS is developing laser-based wireless power transmission technology for space and dual-use applications.

The company said its goal is to help satellites access additional energy directly in orbit, addressing rising power demands from increasingly capable space systems.

Founded by four Politecnico di Torino engineers, ORiS is building what it describes as an in-orbit energy distribution grid.

CEO Andrea Villa said the company aims to make energy in orbit more accessible and to improve how satellites are designed and operated.

Earlybird Venture Partner Dr. Frédéric du Bois-Reymond said ORiS is working on infrastructure that could become foundational for the future space economy.

ORiS said it has already demonstrated wireless power transfer to a hovering drone at more than 100 meters, giving the system a near-term dual-use application while supporting its longer-term space roadmap.

The funding will support technical hiring, subsystem research and development, lab and clean-room expansion, and flight model development for a future satellite-to-satellite wireless power mission.

ORiS expects to deliver a flight model by the end of July for its first in-orbit demonstration with Dcubed, planned for 2027, while continuing work on lunar and other orbital use cases.
