NASA has selected eight companies for the next phase of its Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, establishing a new $10 billion contract framework to expand commercial cargo delivery capabilities for its planned Moon Base.
The selections, announced November 7 at the MAX POWER aerospace expo at Kennedy Space Center, will support the delivery of scientific instruments, technology demonstrations, and infrastructure to the lunar surface.
The selected companies are:
- Blue Origin
- Firefly Aerospace
- Intuitive Machines
- ispace-U.S.
- Lockheed Martin
- Northrop Grumman
- SpaceX
- Voyager Technologies
All eight are eligible to compete for future lunar delivery missions under CLPS 2.0, with each responsible for providing services that include managing, building, and operating lunar landers.
The CLPS 2.0 framework is a 10-year, multiple-award, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract with a combined maximum value of $10 billion.
Rather than guaranteeing each company a specific portion of the funding, NASA will issue future task orders for individual delivery missions, allowing providers to compete for opportunities based on mission requirements and capabilities.
The new framework is intended to strengthen the commercial delivery network needed to transport equipment and infrastructure for NASA's Moon Base campaign, particularly around the lunar South Pole.
CLPS 2.0 will operate alongside the existing CLPS 1.0 contract, whose total value NASA recently increased from $2.6 billion to $4.2 billion to support initial Moon Base objectives. The original contract will remain in place through November 2028, with an additional five-year period to complete previously awarded deliveries through November 2033.
“In the eight months since Ignition, we’ve made incredible strides in accomplishing the near impossible: establishing a permanent outpost on the lunar surface,” said Carlos Garcia-Galan, manager, Moon Base Program. “We’ve consolidated numerous efforts into a streamlined program, evolving our human exploration architecture into an iterative and sustained campaign for Moon Base technology development and implementation. Most importantly, we’ve taken action, awarding new contracts and forging new partnerships to accelerate development.”
