Lockheed Martin and AVIO Partner to Expand Solid Rocket Motor Production

Telemetry Today—

Lockheed Martin and Avio have signed an agreement to expand U.S. solid rocket motor production for ER GMLRS and PrSM missiles at Avio USA's facility in Virginia.

Lockheed Martin and Avio have signed a strategic cooperation agreement to expand solid rocket motor (SRM) production capacity in the United States, aiming to strengthen a critical defense supply chain and increase output of key missile systems.

Initial work, following qualification, will focus on solid rocket motors for Lockheed Martin's Extended Range Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (ER GMLRS) and Precision Strike Missile (PrSM).

Production will take place at Avio USA's new manufacturing facility in Hurt, Virginia, drawing on the solid propulsion expertise of its Italian parent company, Avio S.p.A.

The agreement gives Lockheed Martin access to a share of Avio's commercial SRM supply capacity, adding flexibility as demand for guided munitions increases and helping reduce supply chain constraints.

The arrangement is intended to support higher production volumes for ER GMLRS and PrSM by expanding the industrial base available to manufacture their propulsion systems.

Lockheed Martin said the additional capacity could help accelerate munition deliveries and improve supply reliability for U.S. forces and international customers.

Avio has committed more than $500 million to expanding solid rocket motor manufacturing capacity in the United States, with the goal of becoming a commercial supplier to multiple defense customers.

Avio USA CEO James Syring said the Lockheed Martin programs provide a foundation for the new facility as construction continues and the company builds its U.S. workforce.

Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control President Tim Cahill emphasized the importance of a diversified propulsion supply chain in meeting defense production requirements.
